Rain, Rain, Go Away…
Rainy and snowy days seem to drag on and on, and when your kids start to get bored, having a library of creative ideas to kill time will help turn that buildup of energy into fun and productive playtime!
So what are some great ideas for keeping your little ones occupied on days when the skies are grey? Try out some of these time-killers the next time a rainy day rolls around–and don’t forget to put your own twist on them to keep the games fresh and exciting!
Build a Fort
The old classic! All you need is a stack of pillows, blankets and at least two pieces of furniture. Go big and build the ultimate pillow kingdom with your child–try even rearranging the furniture! Read your child’s favorite stories inside the fort via flashlight, or act out your child’s fairy tale and have the whole family join in.
Play Dress Up
This one’s sure to bring tons of laughs! Go through the vast reaches of your closet with your child and have a fashion show in the once-fashionable faux pas from your past. Want a funny souvenir? Take a photo of your child in your favorite outfit from back in the day and frame it next to an old photo of you wearing it!
Floor + Painter’s Tape = Indoor Hopscotch
This was a great idea! Down the hallway, across the living room, next to a bed… any place in your home can easily become a game of hopscotch when using painter’s tape to outline the boxes and numbers! Hopscotch is tons of fun, and all that hopping is sure to use up plenty of your child’s energy.
The Wonders of the Cardboard Box
When you think of the basics in imaginative exploration, do you think of the empty canvas that is a cardboard box? A race car, a castle, a spaceship… with the help of some markers and your child’s mind, there’s no telling what that box could become!
Create a Craft Kit
Arts and crafts can be a lifesaver on rainy days. Keep a stock of the arts and crafts basics to keep your child entertained and their creativity flowing! Some things you may want to consider for your craft kit are:
- Constriction Paper
- Crayons/Markers/Colored Pencils
- Safety Scissors
- Stickers
- Pipe Cleaners
- Glue Sticks
- Fun-shaped Macaroni
- Coloring Books
- Popsicle Sticks
- Glitter
- Beads & String
- Ribbon
- Paper Towel Tubes, Paper Cups, & other recycled materials
Never be afraid to get creative! The sun will be out again before you know it, and having ideas like these will make the rainy days go by like a charm.
